Medieval Monday with Judith Sterling

Welcome to week 4 of Medieval Monday.

Today I'm hosting Judith Sterling. Her story, Night of the Owl is a medieval time travel. Our heroine Ardyth has already fallen back in time and met the man of her dreams, Hugh. They have gone for a ride and stopped to enjoy the lunch his has packed for them. You see, Ardyth has already instructed Hugh in the art of the sandwich. So, what did his man make for them?

Snippet:

“M-m,” she hummed, her mouth full of the same goodness that filled his own. “Heaven. Particularly the cheese.”
“You share my passion for food.”
“I never met a cheese I didn’t like.”
Follow along next week on Jenna’s blog: https://jennajaxon.wordpress.com/

Books, Chocolate and Wine - Book Review

One of These Nights by Roni Denholtz

This Victorian cozy set in New Jersey was a very enjoyable read.  Murder, séance, ghosts, and a choice of suspects add in an innocent lovely romance and you have it all. Ms Denholtz, well done!

Violet Moore is excited about obtaining the job working with Drew. But she also knows something about Charles' demise and is hiding the fact.

Between visits from other spirits and signs that Charles is attempting to reach them, Violet and Drew are falling in love. Can they succeed before the murderer strikes again?

#AuthorLove C.B. Maurice #Romance

Back Cover Copy:
Emme is the midwife for the Roanoak Colony. Circumstances threaten their survival, but Emme has met a European man calling himself Tighe in the forest where no European man should be.

Tighe has problems of his own. His people fled across the sea to escape mortal men and their iron weapons, but now they are dying out. Stealing children is not an option, but Tighe hopes if Emme and some of the other from the failing colony will agree to come live with his people they will interbreed. However his mother is opposed to bringing mortals into Faerie and threatens to close the border sealing the Fae in and sealing their doom. At the same time, he has lost Emme's trust and does not know how to regain it. His efforts to protect her with Fae magic have also cast a suspicion of witchcraft on her from the expedition.
 Excerpt:
“I want you to teach me how to heal a broken bone.”
“I would teach you if I could, but I cannot.”
“Why? Because I’m a woman? I'm a midwife trained in healing. I'm a willing student.”
He stepped around the tree and leaned on it. “I cannot. You must be born to it.”
“I must be born a man, you mean.” Emme folded her arms.
“No.”
Emme waited. She wasn't sure why. None of the men in her life ever explained 'no.' For them, it was the end of the conversation. Why should this one be different? “What is your name?”
“Tighe.”
“Tighe? That is not a good English name.”
He laughed. The warm, rich sound of it trilled down her spine. “No, it is not.”
“Then where are you from? What are you doing here? There isn't supposed to be anyone living in these parts.” Emme smacked her hands against her skirts. The sound wasn't loud enough to be satisfying. “We are supposed to be the only English here. We have a contract from the Queen.”
“You didn't tell anyone about me, did you?”
His tone was wrong. In addition to the striking coloring, she now noticed the stranger was a little odd looking. His face was thin, regal even. And a little anxious. Something about the tight set of his eyes and the pressure along his lips. His accent was a bit odd too. Like none she’d ever heard. “No, why?”
He sighed, the first overt sign of his tension. “We don't need your people hunting us again.”

#AuthorLove Danita Minnis #Romance

Former MI6 agent Xavier Quinn would say that you're daft if you think he will stop killing for a living. But that is exactly what is about to happen. Very soon now, Quinn will start killing to stay alive. On the run after taking out the wrong man, Quinn would die a happy man if he could just live long enough to ruin the Parliament member who set him up.
Layla, a 2,000 year old vampire with a moral code, has other plans for the contract killer. When she awakens to the sound of a dark rising, she enlists Quinn to join her on a mission to save humanity from her twin sister Tamara.
But Quinn is just the kind of man that a cold-blooded killer like Tamara needs in her world. A man like Quinn, who never believed in humanity, has only one belief; self-preservation. Being a vampire sounds much better than staying human in the game of kill or be killed. Will he stay alive long enough to find out how Layla's love can change the equation?
Excerpt:
Padding into the living room, she watched as the door across the suite opened and two men walked in. The first man was big and round enough to block her view of his thinner companion. Though she chose to remain visible facing them across the large living area, they had not yet seen her standing in front of the bedroom door. The second man closed and locked the door behind him.
They didn’t belong here in this pure, white living room which gave the impression of being up in the clouds. They wore stiff, dark clothes like Aurelius, but they were not like him at all. She could smell hatred. There was no other feeling in them. They had killed many, and they were here for Aurelius.
Ah, praises to Anubis. They are ripe.
She sighed and closed the bedroom door behind her.
The murderers turned.
“Where is Quinn?” The heavy man smiled, while his silent companion went around the room closing the drapes on the panoramic view of Luxor.
Quinn; the name suited Aurelius in this life, nimble and smart, as her Roman commander had been.
“He is bathing.” She smiled as if the two jackals had just come for a visit.
“And what is your name, love?” The heavy man strolled across the expanse of white carpet to walk around the u-shaped sectional sofa. His bulbous red-veined nose bore the colors and marks of a trade route freshly drawn on papyrus. His blood would not be sweet, he drank spirits too often, but there would be enough to satisfy her craving.
“I am Lay-laah.” She met the man half-way, near the sofa, keeping her hands to her sides. She must not alarm them. But she could not stop the bloodlust, she needed so much more blood, and her fingers flexed in excitement, aching to tear him open.
“Well, Lay-laah.” The man chuckled, trying to mimic her accent. “Quinn’s got good taste,” He glanced over his shoulder to his companion, who now held something in his hand. The thin man pointed the metal spear at her.
“Well, this is unfortunate,” the heavy man said. “We came for Quinn, but we’ve got two for the price of one.” He took a similar metal spear out of his jacket and pointed it at her. “It must be fate.”
“Fate. Yes-sss.” Layla grabbed him by the neck. The motion was so swift the man still smiled at her while she sank her teeth into his leathery flesh.
She experienced a moment of discomfort as the heavy man’s metal spear struck her in the chest several times. She rose above him and he toppled backward with a shout and fell over the low glass table in front of the sofa.
The thin man rumbled in disbelief at what must be to him an unexpected turn of events.
It was ever this way; humans could not fathom a being like her, they did not believe in monsters. Neither had she, long ago. But there were many things in the world - seen and unseen - that this killer would fear if he knew of them.

Excerpt:

Julie’s gaze swept the landscape. The moon’s rays glittered on the snowy bows. The birch trees stood with their trunks painted white to match their limbs. Thick pine branches held fast under the weight of the new fallen snow, making them appear as if they wore white blankets made of virginal cotton about each limb. Sparkling mounds cluttered the ground between the trees, hiding the forest’s treasures beneath.
Save the sound of the hooves pounding on the ground, they journeyed through the silent night to a clearing in the trees. Nicholai clicked to his stallion, and with a flick of the reins, the steed increased into a rolling canter up a steep incline. Julie’s thighs pushed against the sides of the horse as she tried to match the new rhythm.
Nicholai’s breath warmed her ear when he spoke. “Not too much further. It’s right up ahead.”
“What’s up ahead?” Just as the words left Julie’s mouth, they crested over the ridge.
The frozen valley below took her breath away. A glaciate waterfall stood still as a statue against the rocky terrain. The cascading water, stopped as if by magic, reflected the moon’s soft rays and cast tiny prisms on the snow below.
Julie’s breath hitched in her throat. She took in the serene beauty of the land as they cruised at a slow trot. Debris rolled under Kedar’s hoofs. It created a hollow rattle in the night, barely audible to Juliette.
When they reached the valley, Nicholai pulled up the stallion and handed the reins to Julie. She patted the horse’s steaming neck as her lover dismounted with a fluid grace. He turned, grabbed Kedar’s reins, then reached up for Julie. Her thick coat seemed to melt as his strong hands clasped around her waist. She put her hands on his shoulders, and the bulge of muscle under his coat played under her fingers when he helped her down. A thrill went through her body.
Her breath frosted the air in a white plume. The lovers held each other, his hands about her waist, hers resting on his shoulders. Quiet as the moon above, they stared deeply into each other’s eyes. Nicholai captured her lips in a gentle caress that welcomed her to this special place.

Books, Chocolate and Wine with Lily Raine

It’s Friday! We’ve been busy this last month reading and writing. I just helped one of the community services I work with and bought school supplies. I can’t believe it’s almost time for school to start. Today, my guest, Lily Raine shares a character interview with us. Anastasia, Ana for short has a lot to share.
What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
What with running away from demons and accidentally turning bears into humans, there was quite a lot of action. But my favorite scene in the book is finding comfort in a place you wouldn’t have thought possible. The scene where Daniel told me he loved me without actually having to say the words was my favorite part. It was where I realized how much someone could care for you without needing anything in return. His caring nature will only continue to support and protect me.
Do you like the way the book ended?
There was some closure about who the leader of the Demon Organization, Destria, was but not enough for me to be fully satisfied. I know there will be two more books, so I am sure to find the answers I need eventually.
Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?
There will definitely be a sequel and then one more book. I think I’m ready to get back into my story and see where the writer takes me. I know there is more developing to do with my relationship with Daniel. And with the Demon King still at large, we need more time to find him.
What is your least favorite characteristic your writer has attributed to you?
My ability to learn languages and remember words and pictures usually serves me well, but it also tends to isolate me from people. Despite living in a gated community near New York City and engaging in dance lessons, I don’t have many friends because my intelligence makes me come across as strange.
Do have any secret aspirations that your author doesn’t know about?
After losing my mother and father at a young age, I know how important family can be. If my uncle had taken my sister and I into his home, I don’t know what would’ve become of us. Yet, he’s never held that over my head or insinuated we are any less his family. If I could, I would want to adopt a child one day and give them that same sense of family.
What is your greatest fear?
Losing my cousin and best friend, Mason. After losing my mother, I couldn’t bring myself to speak. I conveyed my feelings through other avenues, like dancing, but actual words wouldn’t come to me. Mason’s persistence at getting me to speak and always standing by my side, even against blood thirsty mermaids, is the reason he’s my rock.
Who was your first girlfriend/boyfriend and what do you like most about them?
Daniel. I met him at Joya Del Mar Arts Academy when I got roped into going snorkeling with my cousin, Jo, and her two friends. He was on the same boat as us. Daniel is the most caring individual I’ve ever met. His ability to play music as though it were his friend is remarkable and his British accent is cute too.
What other profession would you like to try?
I want to be a genetic scientist. Mason has always been somewhat sickly and I want to try and find a cure. Then I can help other people whose lives are destroyed by senseless violence.
Back Cover Copy:
Anastasia has always been different, and not just because she knows over fifteen languages and prefers to be alone. After she was attacked while visiting family in Russia over seven years ago, Ana has been able to heal rapidly amongst other things. Unable to accept her own immortality, despite increasing proof, she goes away to Joya Del Mar Arts Academy with her two cousins, Jo and Mason. Instead of worrying about recitals and dance steps, Ana discovers a secret world of demons, mermaids and angels. Their only connection however, seems to be an increasing need to find her so that the demons can force Ana to bring back their master. After transforming a bear into a human boy, Ana can no longer hide her abilities and struggles with the idea that she is not human, although she does not know what she is.
When a mysterious man in a mask continues to stalk Ana with the intention of getting her to eat a blue flower, Ana gets the sinking suspicion that the man in the mask is the same young man who destroyed her life seven years prior. When Ana discovers a secret lair hidden beneath the waves where the demons are regrouping, Ana realizes she has a terrible choice to make. Sacrifice her life and the life of the mermaids who fuel the underwater power source, or escape and allow the demons free reign to destroy the human world. But if Ana chooses to accept her immortality, then the life of her cousins and boyfriend, Daniel, will forever be compromised.
Review:
“I was awed by the writing from this very talented author. This is the first YA I've read and I was hooked, especially by this author. The plot was complicated and moved along very well. The characters were well developed. My only problem with the book was that it ended. Now I have to wait for the next book in the series.” -                 5 Star Amazon Review Starla K. Criser

Excerpt:
Coldness spread through my body like a disease when I saw a faint blue color glowing from the woods. It alighted brightly and then dimmed down before becoming completely aglow again.
Without hesitation, I ran towards the light, feeling the heavy pressure of my shoes thumping against my back.
I felt tricked. Each time I neared the blue light, it was extinguished and then relit farther away from where I was standing. Taking a deep breath, I looked at the trees around me and stayed completely still so I could catch movement.
I realized I had gone in a sort of circle chasing the light, but there was a faint directional pattern it seemed to prefer. Acting quickly, I ran in the direction I thought the blue light would appear, stumbling over roots.
For being a small island, the woods were intricate and I was already far away from the road. Regaining my composure, I felt my hands stinging where I’d braced my fall and tried to pull myself to a sitting position, but my legs were tired from hours of dancing.
“Oh, Aria,” The voice was deep and firm. My legs trembled and my fingers twitched in anticipation. “Don’t you want to look at me?”
I started to shake my head, but curiosity made me gave in.
He was abnormally tall. I would guess he was well over six foot, but he was extremely slender. With the right leverage, a person might think they could knock him over. But I saw the sturdy muscle wrapped around his arms, abdomen and legs underneath his tight outfit.
He wore dark pants, dark shoes, and a white shirt with a tie. Over his ensemble was a dark vest and attached hood, a kind of look a modern day Jack the Ripper would wear. His hood was down, exposing a curly black hair and fair skin. His mask was of a kind of monster. Around the bulging eyes of the mask was a type of skeleton, but the cheeks looked like a hollowed out animal. His eyes were a deep purple.
“Do I know you?” I asked quietly as I found my footing and pulled myself up. I wrapped my hands around my bag protectively. I felt foolish for thinking he wanted a pair of Pointe shoes.
The man nodded before walking along the small clearing I had followed him to. “You used to know me.”
My heart became cold. I tried to imagine him without his demon mask. Tried to put a knife in his hand and a scar in the corner of his mouth, but he didn’t feel the part.
“When?”
“Thousands of years ago.”
I wondered if he was sick and had escaped from somewhere. Or if he was simply a very rich teenager who enjoyed dressing up and frightening young women. I knew it wasn’t uncommon in Bay Shore for bored young men to do so.
To disguise my fear and slight confusion, I spoke with logic. “Human life doesn’t extend that far.”
He stopped moving and placed one hand inside of his small vest pocket. “Who said you were a human?”
I stared blankly at him. “What are you then?”
“You know several languages don’t you?”
I blanched, suddenly angry. Hidden beneath my bed in locked chests were books about medicine, animals, languages and mathematics. There was no way he could know what I studied unless he’d violated my privacy. I took a breath and stepped away. “How do you know?”
“I know a lot about you.”
My foot touched a branch I carefully stepped over. “Why?”
“Would you like to see something?” He asked, changing the subject abruptly. Before I could respond, he had withdrawn his hand and was waving a kind of orb in front of me. A bluish glow surrounded the orb, making it impossible for me to see what it actually looked.
“What is that?”
“You’ll find out.” He whispered softly, replacing the object inside his pocket and once again casting us into darkness. “You see, I’m going to let them find it. Shouldn’t take them long to figure out what it is.”
I was so confused about what he was saying, I didn’t realize he’d strode towards me. With him standing clearly in front of me, I felt my body shiver, his height immense.
“I have to test you. I have to make sure.”
I gripped my bag tightly again, prepared to swing if he came much closer. “You speak in riddles.”
He tipped his head to the side and from underneath his mask, I could see a faint smile. “And you speak denial.”
There wasn’t enough time for me to react and before I could even swing my bag around, I felt his hand close around my throat. Screaming would be pointless and would raise my pulse to an even higher rate. I closed my eyes, willing my heart to flow to a natural rate, slowing my anxiety. I heard him whisper one last word before the grass beneath me felt weightless. “Aria.”

Books, Chocolate and Wine with Meredith Bond

Regency romance and magic. These are my kind of stories. Oh, I still love medieval knights and I'm learning to appreciate the contemporary hero. Maybe it's the magic that speaks to me. But to me words are the real magic. Please give a warm Books, Chocolate, and Wine welcome to Meredith Bond. For her it's all about words.

For Joy of the Written Word

I love books. I always have. They’ve entertained me since I was a baby, given me solace when I was down, brought me happiness throughout my life, and taught me everything I’ve ever wanted to know (and more). I can’t imagine a world—or my life—without them.
I love looking at books nearly as much as I like reading them too—and I don’t just mean picture or coffee table books. I mean ordinary novels and non-fiction too. From the title page through to the biography at the end; everything from the way they’re laid out to the fonts to the chapter titles and drop caps. I think they’re fascinating.
So what does one do with such a passion? Why, become a writer and formatter, of course!
I write what I have always loved reading, romance. From the day my mother handed me my first Georgette Heyer Regency romance, I’ve been reading and loving the genre. When I found myself without a job and with nothing to do in rural Massachusetts (having moved there as a new bride to be with my husband), I did the only thing I could think of—I started writing the books I loved reading. Now, oh-so-many years later, I’ve published four books with Kensington Publishers, and fourteen on my own as a self-published author (four of them are republications of the first four, edited and changed a bit, two are short stories in anthologies).
I haven’t always stuck to my beloved traditional Regencies, but have branched out into adding a paranormal element (magic) to my Regencies and then into different time periods in history, including a series of post-Arthurian stories and right now I’m writing a contemporary (with previous life flashbacks to medieval times because I can’t just write contemporary without some history thrown in).
And with my passion for exploring how books look and the rise in self-publishing, I’ve become a formatter of books for indie-authors.
I’ve never been an artist, but I explore my artistic side with my formatting. Laying out a book so that it’s easy to read and pleasing to the eye is my goal. A well formatted book is one where you might notice a few touches here and there—a drop cap (that large first letter at the beginning of a chapter), a picture at the section breaks (I always try to pull an element from the front cover of the book for these)—but for the most part good formatting fades into the background unnoticed and just makes the book easier to read and a more pleasant reading experience.
Ebooks don’t allow for too much fooling around with the formatting because the whole point of an ebook is to allow the reader to decide what font they want to read in and how large the letters should be. But when I format for CreateSpace (print-on-demand), if the client-author allows me, I’ll go all out and fooling with fonts (again, pulling what was used on the front cover), picture separators, drop caps, and add in other fun little touches. I’ll do all that I can to make the book pretty and fun to read.
Books are so much fun. They’re a lifeline for some, and a passion for so many. And now, with e-readers and books being priced as low as 99 cents, it’s so easy to pick one up at your favorite e-retailer and delve right in!
So, the next time you’re enjoying a good read, stop and notice how it looks. If it’s nice, you can probably thank a formatter for that. If not… well, then, perhaps the author or publisher didn’t take the time to make sure that it did. It doesn’t take a great deal of effort to make a book look good, but it can enhance the whole reading experience.
I hope all of your reading experiences are pleasant ones!

Bridging the Storm
Can a twenty year-old woman make life worth living for a thousand year old man?

An immortal knight…

On the night of the winter solstice, Sir Arthur Dagonet once again sips Merlin’s potion and transforms from an elderly man to a young one. Once his metamorphosis was a gift. Now it’s a curse. He’s had centuries of adventure, but lost all he has loved when he could not die. Until the High Priestess of the magical Vallen provides a possible escape from the endless cycle.
A life without life…
Kate Cherington cobbled together a life by making herself a necessary part of her aunt’s household, teaching her cousins how to use their magic. But her life is a trap. Her aunt, the High Priestess of the Vallen, will not present her to Regency London society. Her only escape is within the travel books she devours. Until she meets a man who’s living the life she longs for.
A timeless force…
Can a twenty year-old woman make life worth living for a thousand year old man? Though eager to rid himself of his immortality, brave, beautiful Kate sparks memories of Sir Arthur’s happy exploits with the Children of Avalon, the first of the magical Vallen. But bound by promises to the priestess, Kate and Sir Arthur find themselves facing a force more powerful than either anticipated, a force stronger than any desire for life or death: the magic of love.
Reviews
“Wow, this book is so well written. I like the way Meredith writes and the stories she comes up with are absolutely incredible and unique. I must admit that I haven't read any of the other books in the series but I didn't feel that I needed to. Magic, curses, and fantasy come alive in this story. It is a definite must read! I don't want to give anything away in the story so take my word for it and pick up your copy as soon as it's available!” –Amazon Reviewer, “Toomuch87
An intriguing read that combines romance and magic in equal measure. I enjoyed Magic in the Storm by the same author, and this is sort of a prequel to that book, even though it was written later. The romance was sweet and the character development (especially into those characters who repeat in Magic in the Storm) was well done. A nice, sweet read. – Amazon Reviewer, Mae Clair

Except from Bridging the Storm
“I’m sorry. I don’t believe we’ve been introduced,” she said, her cheeks flushing an even deeper shade of pink.
“Er, uh, no! No,” he chuckled. “I beg your pardon.” He executed a grand leg for her. “Sir Arthur Dagonet, at your service.”
She curtsied in response. “Miss Kate Cherington. I’m Lord Vallentyn’s niece.”
“Ah! Had the pleasure of his company at breakfast,” Dagonet said, smiling. “Shame about the children.”
“So you are the man Aunt Vallentyn invited here to cure them.”
He opened his mouth to say something, debated whether he should make a joke, or just affirm she was correct. He decided to play it safe. “Yes.”
“Will you?” Her beautiful eyes, so expressive, seemed to get paler in the sunlight. Was that possible?
“Will I what?” he asked, his mind befuddled by her beauty.
“Be able to cure them?” she asked.
He almost asked who she referred to but quickly pulled his mind back to the situation at hand—and not a moment too soon. He’d almost made himself look like an idiot. Why did he always make a fool of himself in front of women he was attracted to? He was determined not to do the same with Miss Cherington. He was too old to fall into such silliness. Lowering his eyes to the ground, he placed an appropriately somber expression on his face. “No, I’m afraid I don’t have that ability.”
“But Aunt Vallentyn said you had knowledge that she might use…”
“Oh, yes! Plenty of knowledge. Just not the, er…” he paused for a moment. She was Vallen, right? Yes. She’d used magic to stop her book from falling into the river. “I’m not associated with Fire. Can’t actually heal anyone, don’t you know?”
“No. I didn’t know,” she said, her head tilted slightly, as if trying to figure him out.
This time he couldn’t help but laugh. “Lady Vallentyn…” She’d called her ‘aunt’ hadn’t she? “Your aunt?” At her nod, he continued. “Yes, well, she thinks that I may know of some magic that she could use to cure the children. Don’t know that I do, but I'm more than willing to explore the possibility with her.”
Miss Cherington looked confused. “You don’t know if you know how to cure the children?”
“No. Lady Vallentyn’s going to, or, well, she’s begun to explore my memories, don’t you know?”
“Explore your memories? And what does she think she’ll find there that you don’t know about?”
Dagonet burst out laughing. Luckily, even Miss Cherington saw how ridiculous the question, in fact, the whole situation, was.
“You’re a very funny man, Sir Arthur,” she said laughing. “I only hope my aunt finds whatever it is she thinks you have in your memories, and that…”
“I’m not aware of?” he chuckled.
She laughed. “Yes.”
“Yes, well. I hope so as well.”
