Medieval Monday with Mary Morgan - Excerpt 6

Welcome back to Medieval Monday! This is week six of the new round of authors, snippets, and fun. Our spring theme is the first kiss. Today I am hosting Mary Morgan and her great story, Magnar.

Let me catch you up. Elspeth is in a bind. Ordered to marry Magnar is beyond her comprehension. Will she acquiesce for the sake of her seven year-old nephew, the designated clan chieftain? What will she tell him?

Here is excerpt 6 from Magnar by Mary Morgan.

She grimaced from his words but kept her chin held high. “I won’t let him be hardened.”

“You ken nothing of the responsibility,” he snapped. Turning from her censure, Magnar went back to the stream. “I understand I am not a husband you favor. Nevertheless, as marriage to me, we can undo this pact your brother made.”

She stomped the ground with her foot. “I will not be forced to marry a…a heathen!”

His smile disarmed her barriers. She was captivated by this giant. Returning a smile of her own, Gwen tugged gently. “I will make a deal with you. Once you have recovered, I would like you to escort me around Urquhart—from the grounds to the highest tower.”

He tilted his head to the side. “Even if there is snowfall?”

“Yes.”

“And ye will tell me the truth about why ye fled?”

She laughed softly. “You drive a hard bargain, MacFhearguis, but I agree to your terms.”

Leaning near, he gazed into her eyes and put his hand over hers. “A bargain I shall hold ye to.”

Medieval Monday with Mary Morgan

A Midwinter celebration and magic. They seem to go together quite well. While Patrick and Gwen work through their differences and love, the celebration speaks of unity and peace.
Snippet:
Angus leveled a hard gaze at Patrick. “When we leave come spring, Urquhart shall be placed in the care of King William. I expect those bordering our lands to assist our king in all matters. I ken some have heard the whispers, but I received a missive this morning from the king. He has accepted my proposal to see Urquhart remain with those loyal to the Scottish crown.”
Patrick gripped his mug, stunned with this new declaration. He understood the Dragon Knights needed to retreat, given their magical powers and the spreading of the new religion across the lands, but to have the king nearby would result in Leòmhann becoming a stronghold in defense. More reason for King John to invade our lands.
Angus returned his attention to the druid. “I ask for your blessing over us.”
Smiling, Cathal stepped around the Dragon Knight and placed the log inside the hearth. He drew forth from the folds of his robe a small piece of wood. He waved it high in the air, and the bit of wood sparked into flames. After tossing the burning piece onto the Yule log, he turned and faced the Dragon Knights.
The children gasped in delight.

Medieval Monday with Mary Morgan - Excerpt #10

Welcome to Medieval Monday. Mary Morgan is our guest author today.
Magic and monsters fill this story. Can Adam protect Meggie and defeat the evil Lachlan?

Excerpt #10
She glanced at her brothers, each holding up their relic: Angus’s shield, Duncan’s sword, Stephen’s medallion, and Alastair’s axe.

Angus’s voice bellowed. “From the land of the Ancients. From the stars of the Fae. We, the Dragon Knights from the Order, keepers of the fire, storm, water, and land dragons, open the gate and call forth the beasts!”

The Earth trembled with a power the world had never seen before. Her brothers’ eyes mirrored the energy. It gathered, grew, and finally with a deafening roar, four dragons burst forth in a blinding light from their relics, scorching a trail in the inky blackness. Their tails twisted and snapped. She could hear the flapping of wings and gnashing of teeth. Fire burst free from all of them.

“How can we be of service?” asked Desmond, handing Ailsa her dirk. Her name sounded familiar, yet he could not place where he had heard it mentioned.
“We were traveling to the loch when we came under attack by English soldiers. Ye must come now. Several of our guards have already been killed. My father was battling two men when he ordered me to run away.”
Alastair retrieved his axe. “Bloody bastards! Our contacts have informed us King John has ordered more soldiers into these parts. We have managed to keep the peace, but this comes too close to Urquhart land.”
“Then ye will help us?”
“Aye,” Desmond and Alastair stated in unison.

Medieval Monday Blog How with Mary Morgan

Welcome to week 12 of the Medieval Monday Blog Hop. I’m hosting Mary Morgan on my blog and she is hosting me on her blog. The Druids have come to celebrate the Midwinter with the Dragon Knight and his clan. But the King was supposed to be attend. Why is he absent? Here is her continuing snippet from A Highland Moon Enchantment
Excerpt:
Filling his mug, Muir lifted it high. “I thank ye for sharing the knowledge.” After draining the contents, he placed it on the table. Removing his dirk, he skewered a piece of meat from the boar.
Though the fire blazed hot, a cold tendril of uneasiness slipped within Ailsa at the silence around the table. Muir’s behavior made no sense, and she could see anger in her father’s eyes. Each day, the man attempted to battle the MacKays with words or blades. However, his manner with Desmond was far worse.
Angus waved a hand toward the minstrels, and they picked up their instruments. They filled the hall with a lively tune, breaking the tension at the table. He then took his wife’s hand and led her away to start dancing. Smiling at the two, Ailsa filled her trencher with some of the tempting dishes in front of her.

Why Mary Morgan Loves to Write Medieval Romances

Happy Medieval Monday. My Medieval Monday friends are eager to tell you why they love this era. Today I'm hosting Mary Morgan. She'll tell you where her heart belongs!

I’ve often been asked this question, “Why Medieval romance? Why not Regency, Victorian, or Western?” In truth, I love them all, but my heart belongs to one. It started when my fingers opened a book about the great Irish King, Brian Boru (941-1014A.D.). His story is legendary, especially with the people of Ireland. King Brian led the Irish to the peak of their Golden Age—from poetry, arts, saints, and scholars. A spark ignited within my soul for more.

I sought out tales of knights in shining armor and folk heroes, delving into a life teeming with richness, though at times harsh and violent. Yet, it wasn’t until I devoured the history of Brian Boru that I became immersed in medieval life. From there, I treasured tales of life in castles, traveling on horseback, studying foods and herbs. My list is endless and always growing on medieval ways. Yes, there are even days when I long to travel back in time and explore the history, lore, and beliefs.

Therefore, when it came time to pen my own stories, it only made sense for me to place them all in a medieval setting. One might say I live vicariously through my characters. It’s a love affair with all things medieval.

Author Bio:
Award-winning Scottish paranormal romance author, Mary Morgan, resides in Northern California, with her own knight in shining armor. However, during her travels to Scotland, England, and Ireland, she left a part of her soul in one of these countries and vows to return.

Mary's passion for books started at an early age along with an overactive imagination. She spent far too much time daydreaming and was told quite often to remove her head from the clouds. It wasn't until the closure of Borders Books where Mary worked that she found her true calling—writing romance. Now, the worlds she created in her mind are coming to life within her stories.

Medieval Monday Blog Hop - Mary Morgan

Excerpt Nine - DRAGON'S KNIGHT SHIELD by Mary Morgan

Honor. The very word seeped into his being, and Angus realized he would risk everything to defend Deirdre. Give his life for his woman. He did not save Meggie. But he could save another. He would not let Deirdre’s life perish. A flash of light glinted from the torches and glancing to his left, he saw his shield within his grasp.

Only one choice was left to Angus and it stared back at him from the ground. “Do ye not want to possess the shield, Lachlan? ’Tis yours to command.”

Medieval Monday with Mary Morgan

Happy Medieval Monday! It’s cold here on the northeast coast, snow and freezing temperatures. Ah, but a good story and a hot cup of tea (or a glass of wine) can take the edge off the weather. Today I’m hosting Mary Morgan. Here is an excerpt from her story, A Magical Highland Solstice. I hope you enjoy it.
Excerpt:
Cormac’s stomach protested fiercely as he descended the stairs. He had eaten little on his journey with Eve—happily content to watch her munch on an apple, or nibble on bread and cheese. She chatted between bites, her hands flying about to match her liveliness. When she complained he had not eaten anything, he relented. He watched in fascination as she wedged cheese and apple slices between the two pieces of bread she tore off for him. It was the most glorious meal he had ever eaten. However, his heart almost stopped beating when she nearly cut her finger with his sgian dubh.
As he attempted to snatch the blade from her hand, she smacked him away, informing him she knew how to handle a knife.
He chuckled at the memory and nearly collided with the golden-haired beauty coming toward him.
“Yikes! I’m sorry, Cormac.” She grabbed his arm, trying to steady the trencher with her other hand.
He lifted the item from her hand as it was about to tumble free. “My pardons. My thoughts were elsewhere.” Inhaling the aroma, he asked, “Wild boar with mushrooms and onions?”
“You have guessed correctly, Laird Cormac.”
He arched a brow. “We are feasting grandly with only a few days before the Yule?”
Eve glanced over his shoulder and behind her before stepping close, as if she was about to pass along some great secret. “They’re experimenting with new mushrooms and herbs from Cathal. I heard it on good authority that a certain laird must approve the dish.” She gave him a wink.
Cormac inspected the dish and then lifted his finger.
“You wouldn’t dare,” she protested, smacking his hand away.
Lifting the trencher high over his head, he replied, “Remember, I am the laird, aye?”
Eve fisted her hands on her hips and glared at him. “And because you are the leader of the clan, you must show some respect.”
His gaze raked over her face and settled on her lips. “I will concede defeat, but only if ye grant me a kiss.”
Her cheeks flushed as she looked around the corridor. “Here?”
“Aye.” As Cormac stepped closer, Eve moved backward.
“What if…someone sees us?”
Cormac’s smiled turned predatory. “All I asked for was a kiss, nae to plunder your body.”
When her back hit the wall, she parted her lips. “One kiss only?”
He arched a brow, understanding her meaning. “I beg for only one. Yet, later, I shall demand many more.”
“Then take your kiss, my laird,” she whispered.
Slowly, Cormac lowered his mouth to hers, and a moan of pleasure slipped through her lips. Powerful, hungry desire spiraled through him as her tongue invaded him, seeking, stroking. He growled, taking all she had to offer. When one of her hands wrapped around his neck, he deepened the kiss. He was lost in her touch, her lips, and Cormac burned for more.
Finally breaking free, Cormac found he was the one trembling.
“Is your arm getting tired?” she asked, breathing heavily as her hand slipped across his shoulder.
“Nae.”
She gave him a gentle push back and stepped away from his embrace. “Good. I’ll relieve you of the trencher, though I’ll make sure to place it near you.”
Obliging, Cormac handed her the trencher of food. As he strolled away, he said, “Ye may inform Moira and the others I approve of the meat.”
Eve glanced over her shoulder at him. “Now why would I lie? You haven’t tasted the food?”
“Och, but I have, fair Eve. From your lips.”
“You’re incorrigible.”
Cormac roared with laughter. “I shall leave it to ye to help me make amends for my bad habits, Lady Eve.”
She snorted and walked into the Great Hall.
“By the hounds…what have ye done to me, sweet lass?”
Back Cover Copy:

Medieval Monday with Mary Morgan

Welcome and Happy Halloween! No ghosts or goblins here. Today Mary Morgan joins us with an excerpt from Dragon Knight’s Ring. Adam has the painful secret that Maggie is struggling to remember. Their outing for a picnic by the lake tests his resolve to hold back the truth. Enjoy the excerpt!

What do ye mean we can finish in the morn?” Adam eyed her skeptically.

Meggie stepped away from him. “I haven’t been riding in a few days, so I thought with the weather being fine, we could take Fion and Ciar out for a long ride. There’s this beautiful ridge called Drumbuie. Ye can see Loch Ness in all directions.” She nodded to the basket. “I’m tempting ye with some food, too.”

Adam dropped the shovel. Grabbing a cloth, he wiped his forehead. He did not need food to be tempted to go anywhere with Meggie. He knew the place well, since it had been a favorite of theirs. He was curious, though, and asked, “Why?”

She grimaced in good humor. “I’m tired of hiding in the shadows. I want to try and remember.”

Pleased with her answer, Adam reached past her, his arm brushing against hers—the mere contact made his groin tighten. Picking up the basket, he whistled for Ciar. “Then I will do my best to help ye.”

After preparing both animals, they made their way out of Aonach and headed for the hills. Clouds loomed in the distance, but Adam deemed they posed no threat to their outing. He let Meggie set the pace, galloping through heather with naught a care in the world. She came to a light cantor when she spotted a herd of deer.

“See the females.” She pointed to the south. “Those belong to Red Brute the stag.”

Bringing his horse alongside her, Adam shielded his eyes from the early afternoon sun. “’Tis a fine family he has there. Why is he given the name?”

Meggie twisted in the saddle, obvious to Adam that she was looking for something. “Bruce named him after some obnoxious client he had dealt with several years ago. He noticed the stag had the same attitude and so aptly named him Red Brute.” She laughed playfully. “Though, knowing Bruce, he meant it in jest. For ye see, he loves all animals, regardless of their temperament. Oh, there he is! See, up along the rocky edge. He never strays far from the females.”

Fascinated, Adam watched as the stag wandered at a leisurely pace and then lifted its head as if sensing their presence. “Noble animal,” he murmured.

“Aye,” she agreed. “I never tire of watching them or any animals. They roam with freedom I long for some days.”

Adam’s gaze turned back to Meggie. He detected a feeling of melancholy in her voice. “Are ye not already free, Meggie?”

Frowning, she looked away. “Aye, I am, but I sense…more within me. There are days I can hear whispers of someone calling my name along the breezes. As if the two worlds—past and present cross over. I’m bound by this and the other.” She kept her gaze focused on the animals. “And there’s always these burning questions I carry.”

“Which are?” he asked, bringing Ciar closer to her and Fion.

When she turned back toward Adam, her eyes glistened with tears.

Adam’s heart stilled. A strong urge to tell her everything overtook him.
