My mind doesn't seem to work that way. So I've started interviewing the characters and seeing where it leads. It seems to be working for me.

Great post. If you don't give a damn about the heroine, who cares if the train runs her over?

The charts of where he went to school, background etc are really only another way (I think) of getting into the person's skin. If you understand the background, it makes the method acting a little easier. Or so I've found. I do a little bit of both - enough background to understand why he'd do what I want him to do - which is a bit the other way round, isn't it? I want him to do X. What in his background would make him do that?

But all in all, it's whatever works for you to make those characters come alive.Greta van der Rolhttp://gretavanderrol.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1360784031875264514.post-53738882025573904042012-01-15T11:28:42.841-05:002012-01-15T11:28:42.841-05:00@JanetPepsin

It is really what I love most about writing. I do think that comes from knowing your character's story. What makes them react.

Thanks for stopping by -

... Most of the time I write, I have an idea of where I'm going, but the characters really determine the scene-to-scene action. I've been reading some suspense novels lately, and it's when the characters, both good and bad, are in action, that the suspense is really driven forward. A truly evil villain, doing really nefarious deeds, reels me in and gives me the creeps for days.
Thanks for sharing Browne's essay.

JanetJanet Pepsinnoreply@blogger.com
